What chance did believing have
When a sacrament no less
Than Bach’s titanic Mass
Couldn’t make me believe?
Not in God at least,
Engendering, at best,
A reverence for Bach.
“Same difference,” some would say,
Committing a cliché
One hesitates to knock,
Considering that one
Is murmuring “Amen.”
