We suffered long, a long hard dream
Of paradise, the cold magnolias
Heaped with wind,
Lace of ice in the scuppernong.

Cohere, declared the morning bird,
Cohere, cohere, cohere.
Beyond our death, the black bedsheets,
It piped its hopeless song.

Graveyard cold with blossom bursts.
One stone touch
And a granite nymph begins to run
And ran she days on days, and runs, and long.
