Late afternoon, after we had
chased the ball, and each other,
and splashed the last
of the water balloons
across the bricks
by the fading garden,
after he had had
a small cup of yogurt,
and then another,
and animal crackers,
and glass of juice,
and wandered off,
playing with his blocks,
and toy trucks,
I settled back on the recliner,
and drifted off,
waking as he lay
his stuffed animals,
foxy, and cat, and Mickey,
by me, and then his blanket,
half across my legs,
and his pillow, too,
explaining that when
I went night night,
I needed these things,
for which I was most grateful;
and, especially, for
his kind attention.
